Procedures Offered

  • Pulpotomy. A pulpotomy is a procedure that removes dental pulp from the crown of the tooth only, allowing it to remain in the root of the tooth. A medicated dressing is placed in the tooth to eliminate infection. This is most often performed on primary (baby) teeth.
  • Pulpectomy. During a pulpectomy all of the dental pulp is removed from the entire root canal, both the crown and root of the tooth. Then the tooth is filled with a replacement material that is resistant to infection.
  • Dental Abscess Treatment. A dental abscess is an infected pocket of tissue in the mouth. It is typically severe enough to require treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Emergency Dentistry

How do I know if my situation is an emergency?

If you are experiencing severe pain or any dental situation that you feel can’t wait until the next day, you should treat it like an emergency. Prompt treatment could mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth.

Does every dental emergency result in a root canal?

The type of treatment depends on the type of emergency. In many cases a toothache or abscess indicates an infected tooth, which will need a root canal. But a different emergency situation may need to be treated in another way.

What is the difference between a pulpotomy and a pulpectomy?

During a pulpotomy the dental pulp is only removed from the crown of the tooth. It is most often performed on baby teeth. A pulpectomy removes all of the dental pulp from the tooth and is commonly performed on permanent teeth.

What is an abscess?

An abscess is an infected pocket of tissue. It often looks like a swollen bump on your gums or the inside of your cheek. It may have a white head at the center that may ooze pus or blood. An abscess is a common sign of an infection.

Will my tooth need a crown after treatment?

There is a high probability that your tooth will need to be covered with a crown after a pulpotomy or pulpectomy. A crown will protect the remaining tooth material and the root so that it stays firmly in place for many years.
